Mark Branson has been President of BaFin, Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, since August 2021. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism, the European Systemic Risk Board and the Plenary of the Financial Stability Board.
Before moving to Bonn, he led the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA in Bern as CEO for more than seven years. He had joined FINMA in 2010 as Head of Banking Supervision and was appointed Deputy CEO in 2013.
From 1997 to 2009 he worked at UBS, where he was responsible for global group communications and branding, served as CEO of UBS Securities Japan and most recently was CFO of the Wealth Management and Swiss Bank division. Earlier in his career he held positions in London with Credit Suisse and Coopers & Lybrand. He studied Mathematics and Management Studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, and holds an MSc in Operational Research from Lancaster University.
BaFin is Germany's integrated financial supervisory authority. Founded in 2002 and based in Bonn and Frankfurt am Main, it supervises banks, financial services providers, insurers and securities trading.
The evening is built around a moderated on-stage conversation between Mark Branson and two editors of the St. Gallen Business Review, followed by an open question round with the audience. The format runs for roughly 45 to 60 minutes and leaves deliberate room for questions that rarely fit into a shorter appearance.
The event is hosted jointly by ESPRIT St. Gallen and the St. Gallen Business Review. It will be held in German.
